Shoulda Bet on the Bey

It was the 3rd night in August
Outside of Laredo
At a track where the thoroughbreds race
me and my partner
were carefree and happy
till I looked up and saw her sweet face
She was classy and stylish
Dressed in high fasion
standin' alone by the rail
So I finished my whisky
and gave her a wink
and that was my ticket to hell
Yeah I shoulda bet on the bob-tail nag
shoulda put all my cash on the bay
But I bet my life on another man's wife
and I'm payin' my debt off today
A man stepped between us
looked in my eyes
said "mister, you've drank you're last drink
He reached for his pistol
My friend pulled his knife
and stuck him before I could blink
The woman she screamed
and the man cried out
"I'm a Ranger, and he's done me in!"
Two men grabbed my arms
My friend ran away
Now I'm sittin' here in this pen
Yeah I shoulda bet on the bob-tail nag
shoulda put all my cash on the bay
But I bet my life on another man's wife
and I'm payin' my debt off today
Old Sparky is waitin'
my head has been shaved
The preacher is holdin' my hand
The lights will go dim down in Huntsville tonight
when the warden throws that switch
on an innocent man...
Yeah I shoulda bet on the bob-tail nag
shoulda put all my cash on the bay
But I bet my life on another man's wife
and I'm payin' my debt off today
