The letter came last Friday, somehow I didn't see,
I read it then realized it's for our friend across the street.
He told her in his letter it was time for him to go,
He said he'd fallen in love with someone else,

He said he'd help her with the kids, send them money now and then,
He didn't wanna be tied down, or live a lie like this again.
He said that he'd quit loving her, many years ago,
I thought their love would last forever,

I had to take her that letter, and hope she would believe,
That I hadn't read the things he wrote, how that he had planned to leave.
I put that letter in my pocket and prayed my feelings wouldn't show,
Can I find the words to comfort her,

I knocked on her door, they were crying as I walked in,
She said thanks so much for coming, it's nice to know we have good friends.
I guess you heard about his wreck today, it sure came as quite a blow,
He never had the chance to say goodby,

I threw that letter in my fireplace, and watched the truth go up in smoke,
