I studied a lyric from a classic Neil Young song to find how he creates scenes, mind pictures, lets you in on what he's thinking, zooms in and out on details, moves a good story along. You can guess at the song if you'd like, I didn't try to steal direct ideas of his, just broadstrokes, if you're stuck lyrically, use this idea. I think it ended up sounding a lot more like Jason Isbell, a fellow Southern Man, hope you enjoy
Better Days
© 2014 Kenny Leverett
I'm gonna rise up in the morning
While the sun's still breaking thru
Pack only the things I really need
Head out to Hwy 22
Stretch my eyes till I'm awake
Breathe deep while the air's still cool
And I'm thinking bout the road ahead
But mostly about you
And the better days we knew
There were better days it's true
Collected paintings and souvenirs
On display for all to see
From all the places that we've been
Do they mean more than me
And the better days we knew
There were better days it's true
Hoping that the wind is kind
And pushing gently at my back
Hoping things will fall my way
And find the inside track
Back to better days with you
There were better days it's true
