Serving Son
© 2006 Eddie Minyard (BMI)
V1 Home from the war for about 90 days
Sixty in rehab, the rest in a haze
Tryin’ to adjust the best way that I can
To my new metal legs, and my missing left hand
It’s gonna be tough, but I ain’t layin’ down
It sure won’t be easy, but I’ll get around
Sure gonna miss pickin’ my old guitar
But I love my music, so I’m learnin’ the harp
Chorus
Now don’t pity me, America
Just recognize what I have done
I stepped up for you, and did all I could do
Just a soldier, just one serving son
V2
Joining was never a question for me
I’d give my life for the Land of the Free
Never expected a “life changing wound”
The doctors all tell me I’ll get used to it soon
And the faces that turn when I come their way
I guess they just don’t know quite what to say
I wish they’d just smile, and look in my eyes
And know that I served to protect them with pride
Chorus
Please don’t pity me, America
Just recognize what I have done
I stepped up for you, and did all I could do
Just a soldier, just one serving son
Bridge
But I cry to God in the middle of the night
I can’t stand the pain this will cause my young wife
I can’t show the fear that I feel deep inside
Oh, God, give me someplace to hide…
Chorus
I said, don’t pity me, America
Just recognize what I have done
I stepped up for you, and did all I could do
Just a soldier, just one serving son
I’m just one soldier,
I could be your serving son
