I collaborated with my wife, Faith and my son, Jeremy in writing and recording music that mostly tells the story of my childhood, life and family. It's an eclectic mix of folk, country, jazz and a little rock.
This was my first song, written in Los Vegas on June 30, 1994. This really happened in about 1960, after my mother died.
He was just four years old
When his mama died
And left him so alone.
His Daddy tried the best he could
But he couldn't be a mom.
His rough hands just weren't made
For wipin' tears or wrappin' Band-aids
But he took him on the road
And cared for him
As well as he knew how.
Chorus
A boy needs a mama
That's what Daddy said.
A boy needs a mama,
To tuck him into bed.
A boy needs more than just a daddy,
He needs a stable home
And Jimmy wondered how he
Could help his Daddy find a mom.
Jimmy's playmates were
The hotel clerks
And truck stop waitresses.
His daddy knew
That Jimmy needed
More than he could give.
But on the road from dawn til dark
How could he meet the special one
To take his mama's place
And be his new-found mom?
His Daddy left him with
The hotel clerk
One day to load his truck
He found a Sears catalog
He thought it was such luck
He knew at once just what it was-
A catalog for moms.
With a pair of scissors and a happy smile
He started cuttin' out the moms.
Cuttin' mamas from the Sears catalog
With their pretty dresses
And their smiles from ear to ear.
He knew his dad would like one of them
Send away to get one of them
He would be so happy
With a mama from the Sears catalog.
His daddy came back
To the hotel room
And saw what Jimmy did.
Jimmy showed him all the mamas
Said "Which one will you pick?"
His daddy looked at
The pictures on the floor
And held up the prettiest one.
"We'll find your mama soon,
My boy,
And she will call you Son."
