Back To The Shenandoah
VERSE 1 She lives alone in the Shenandoah Valley,
Lost in the soft blue-green haze,
Sheltered by ridges of giant old pines trees,
Just her and her memories of happier days.
Her cries echo mournfully over the valley
How did life go so damn wrong.
She longs for the arms of the man she once held here,
But couldn’t hold on to for long,
She sends her wishes to the westward-bound moon
To carry along through the night,
On its great journey to the Valley he lives in,
And with each wish, she wishes he might
Someday come back to the Shenandoah Valley
And the westward-bound moon sails between,
Over the plains and the mountains and desert,
Out to the San Joaquin.
VERSE 2 He lives alone, in the San Joaquin Valley,
Where the land is as flat and wasted as he,
The dreams he came out with dried up in the hot sun
To dust in the San Joaquin breeze.
He came here looking for wide open spaces,
Room to find himself in,
But wide and open is a whole lot like empty,
And each piece he finds, he just loses again.
He’s blind from the glare as he stares at the sun,
And lost in the dark as the sun sails away,
Then the moon crosses over the San Joaquin River,
And the San Joaquin night lights bright as midday.
He swears that the moon was talking right to him,
Telling him he needs to go
Back through the desert, the mountains, the plains,
Back to the Shenandoah.
